It works because it's pure to its vision, when other games would make sure to throw in checklists, collectables, a story, time trials, and a whole bunch of mechanics to "gamify" the experience and foster "engagement." There's none of that here. It's sad, because Proteus really is a quiet achievement. No progress has been made on it years, and even his home webpage seems down. While he has a short HTML 5 game out prior to that, his only other project was a gorgeous game called Forest of Sleep, which seems to be based on Russian folktales. Proteus is Ed Key's only published full game. Key also mentions one of his influences was the Soviet animated short "The Hedgehog and The Fog," which is about getting lost. Key in interviews spoke about how he is influenced by the hills and geography of Cumbria, where he lives, and Proteus feels very much like exploring a quiet, people-less countryside. It simulates going out on a walk, seeing sights, nature, and animals. I mention that Proteus is an "simulator of a walk." By that I mean it is designed to simulate the experience of walking and exploring about a place, not the mechanics of walking. But the ending was beautiful in its own way. There's no story, and no narrative even the Vita's achievements are cryptic, and almost zen koans. It's just ending your journey on the current island, and you can always go to a new one (or the same one if you snap a picture of it, which acts as sort of a save), It's something you definitely don't want to spoil, but when I realized what was happening, I didn't even know how to feel, and then I just watched the moon until the journey ended. I've played a lot of games, and I think Proteus's ending is one of the more striking ones. There is a form of progression to it, and the journey does have an end, You can advance it using a specific landmark. You soon notice points of interest, and the game's structure becomes apparent. The game has surprising detail you can even look up into the sun, and the music changes as the lighting brightens to reflect being blinded. You can sit down with the X button, and just watch a crowd of critters sing. Rain tinkles, rabbits make music as they hop away, resting near a stone keep lets you hear bagpipe-style music, and more. Everything has its own sound or music to it, making a little soundtrack as you explore. Watching a cloud formation come in from the sea while raining over the water is something I don't think I've seen much in games.Īs you walk, you encounter wildlife, weather, mountains, and structures. You can even climb above them and look down at the cloud-covered landscape from a mountaintop. They have their own altitude and roll in on the wind, often obscuring the sky. A really impressive effect are the game's clouds. Despite this, it has sort of a rough beauty to it you can see owls fly and roost in trees, crabs skitter along the beach, and more. The game is mostly in lo-fi textures, sort of a 3-D atari/minecraft look but without much shading. Your time there is simply spent exploring it. You start by swimming to a randomly generated island. It's an unusual game, and there's some debate about whether you can call it a game at all. It's the work of two people, a British game developer named Ed Key, and a musician named David Kanaga. Proteus came out in 2013 for the Vita, and a little earlier for PC. I found a really striking and unusual game, one that earns the title of walking sim in a way most don't. It stuck in my mind, and I eventually bought it on digital since Vita games are winding down. I was looking over Limited Run's list of Vita games, and one title got my eye.
